Untitled (the history of candles)
My piece is based on the history of candles. Candles used to be made from plant wax or animal fats which burned and let off toxic smoke and smelled horrible. One of the first things that made candles smell pleasant and burn clean was the bayberry which was first incorporated by women in colonial America. The berries could be boiled to create a clean burning sweet smelling wax, or it could also be incorporated into candles themselves. My piece features a female hand made of beeswax and a metal bayberry branch.
